Virgin Mobile said Wednesday that the company had restored its SMS text and data services, as the company prepares to throttle users with high data use later this week.
"The current outage has been resolved. If you are still experiencing issues, try removing your battery and restarting your device," the company tweeted at 7:23 AM PT. The company had first acknowledged the outage 18 hours before.
Virgin is one of Sprint's prepaid brands, although Sprint didn't appear to be affected by the outage. Sprint didn't acknowledge the outage via its Twitter account, and a Sprint customer representative who responded to a request for comment didn't directly answer a question as to the root cause of the outage.
"We did have some outages yesterday which have been resolved," a Sprint representative said in an email. "Customers may need to turn off their phone, remove the battery, put it back and turn it on - 'reboot' - and everything should work."
Last year, Virgin said that it would start throttling its 3G data speeds when usage exceeded 2.5GB per month—likely to about 256 Kbits/s or below, a spokeswoman said at the time. Virgin did the same in February 2011 for its once-unlimited Broadband2Go Internet plans.
"Starting March 23rd, 2012, if you use over 2.5GB of data during your monthly cycle, your data speeds may be reduced to 256kbps or below for the rest of that monthly plan cycle," Virgin Mobile explained in a FAQ. "During this time, you may experience slower page loads and file downloads, and lags in streaming media."
Virgin Mobile USA was recently recognized as the "J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Customer Service Champions," one of only 50 companies to be recognized with the honor, according to Virgin.
